Kannauj attars vs French-style attars — what is the real difference?

I get asked this a lot, so let us discuss. Traditional Kannauj attars are distilled into sandalwood oil over months. Most French-style attar oils are alcohol-free perfume oils blended in days. Different crafts, different results — neither is automatically better, they are just different things.

3-4 hours on skin is actually normal for pure distillates — they are intimate by nature. The magic is how long they last on clothes. Try a drop on your collar and check tomorrow morning.

How long should a good Kannauj attar last on skin? Mine fades in 3-4 hours and I do not know if that is normal or I got a weak batch.

This explains why my Kannauj rose smells so different from the French-style rose oil I bought last year. The Kannauj one is deeper, almost earthy.
